![]() Martin has created an art form known as the Mystery Box that leaves all manner of clues and breadcrumbs, leading the reader on a journey of discovery. Despite the fact that the book is written from the perspective of someone who has not experienced the events, the reader is overwhelmed by the weight of the decisions Targaryen must make, the joys and despairs of Targaryen’s domestic life, and the terror and abhorrence of war. The reader is encouraged to decide for themselves what actually transpired as Gyldayn often points out sources’ motivations, discusses rumors and songs, and discusses the possibility of certain people’s alleged actions, creating an ambiguity that makes the happenings feel alive. The author of the book is attributed to Archmaester Gyldayn, who chronicles the experiences of the Targaryen generations through multiple first- and second-hand accounts. George RR Martin portrays history the way he likes it, including all the betrayal, brutality, struggles, emotions, love, and sex of human nature. Through Fire and Blood, we see the world of ASOIAF through the eyes of a person who reached into the ASOIAF universe and brought one of their textbooks to us. ![]() In both figurative and literal terms, Fire and Blood depict the (fictional) history of the Targaryen Dynasty (to the start of King Aegon III’s reign).
